Rexanne's Web Review
Web Sights & Insights
Issue #4 - April 4, 2000
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome all newcomers!
Hope everyone is having a great week so far! Been nothing but busy here at our house. Lots of spring goodies going on at school, not to mention after school activities, play dates and ... oh yeah ... work! LOL! Geesh ... who has time for it? ;-) -That wink is for the benefit of my boss who has subscribed to this newsletter! What I'd like to know is how anyone has time to cook anymore. I USED to be a pretty fair master in the cuisine department. Now, I swear by fast food and the freezer section at the market. Ya think maybe that's why we all look a little pale lately? Speaking of "fast food" ... in the fine print at the bottom of this newsletter, I make what I consider to be a clever remark about SPAM. Well, one of our readers got a giggle from it. I think I got a better giggle from her email. Here's what she had to say:
Reader's Comments:
"Had to chuckle over your comment about Spam! A friend was visiting me at my cabin last summer, and we were coming up with something we would both enjoy, and was quick and simple ... keep in mind, here are two women in their 50's having a 'slumber party'! Yep, yep, yep ... we finally chose a fried Spam and cheese sandwich ... and ooooh'd and ahhhhh'd with each bite! Not to say I want to make it a weekly menu habit ... but it sure brought back some good memories. Somewhere out there is a Spam Convention held annually ... wouldn't that be a 'hoot'? If anyone knows its whereabouts and any info on it, I would love to hear from them!" - Jan

This Week's Web Review Sponsored by:
The Magic Life - A Novel Philosophy
The Magic Life tells an intriguing story, a metaphysical mystery, that keeps you eagerly turning the pages while its life lessons fill the pages you turn. On one hand it's the story of a man who dreamt of becoming a magician, but instead became an accountant - a man who yearned for one particular woman, but never quite had the courage to tell her so. On the other, the story of an ordinary young man who learns far more about life, love, and the illusion of death, than he ever dreamed possible.
(I am reading this book now ... full of twists and turns and intrigue! Just when you
think you might know what's going on, wham! It's a great read!)

Parenting & Family Link(s) of the Week:
Oh man, I am sick of controversy! LOL! How about moving on to a fun topic this week? ;-) Like ... adolescents and teenagers! No laughing matter or hilarious? My older daughter THINKS she's a teenager at not quite 12 years old, complete with hormone surges and attitude. This is adolescence?!
Our kids are growing up faster than we did at their ages. This is a lament from generation to generation so we might as well get used to it. I remember living through the dreaded years and they were definitely dreadful. :-) If you think it's tough being a parent, try being a teenager in today's world. Not only are they dealing with raging hormones, they have school shootings and violence to contend with. Poor dolls ... they need all the love and support we can give them.
There is plenty of information available online to help. Below are web sites devoted to the preteen and teenage years with help on how to parent our developing babies.
From communication to diet issues, this is a wonderful site that offers practical advice and support: Parenting Today's Teen
This next link will take you to a super community site for parents of teens. Lots of
articles, tips, suggestions and good advice. Parents of Teens
And just in case you haven't been there, here's a link to a page I created that made
perfect sense to me and countless others who have read it: Kids Are Dogs, Teens Are
Cats
Enjoy them, love them ... they will always be our babies. Adolescents and teens can be
a lot of fun if you happen to like the same things they do ... guess I'm lucky that way!
;-)

Food & Cooking Site of the Week:
The Webville Ladies Society is a select group of 50 women, of mature status and great taste with a love for the finer things in life. The Victorian Era, dating from 1835 to 1901, brought with it elegance and splendor as a part of everyday life. They have brought the feeling of this gentler time and era into their beautiful pages. Take a step back in time with them ... to those days, of times gone by.
The recipes on this site are beautifully displayed and look amazing. Some are more complicated than others but all sound delicious! Recipes are categorized by course, from appetizers to desserts. You will want to cook gourmet after a breeze through here. ;-) Visiting this site will allow a touch of beauty and creative cooking into your lives. I spent over an hour browsing this great site and came away feeling lucky to have found these gracious and remarkable women! There is a page with beautiful kitchen printables ... recipe cards, gift labels, etc. and a terrific hints and tips page.
Enjoy and Bon Apetit!

Kid's Site of the Week:
The Diary Project is a site where teens can share their innermost secrets and feelings
with honesty, openness and connectedness, anonymously. Kids are encouraged to offer
feedback on diary entries, to spill their angst and generally feel supported by their own.
This site can be slightly disconcerting to parents of children who are in their teen years
or a little younger. Some of the diary entries are heartbreaking. Some are truly inspiring
and others funny. This is a great resource for teenagers who would like a place to let it
all out and receive anonymous peer feedback and support.

Tip or Trick of the Week:
Here's a great tip sent in by reader Libby:
"To remove Easter Egg dye from little hands, use toothpaste! Works every
time."
Toothpaste can be used to clean other stubborn stains from hands and munchkin mouths, like
Kool-aid mustaches or any of the other *wonderful* food-coloring dye kids seem to love!
Works great on washable sneakers, too.
